If you have a baby that you're using powdered
formula for, then you know how important it is to use the right type of water
in the solution. The right type of water should be clean and completely safe.
The problem is that too many parents just don't know what the right type of
water is. In many cases they'll play it safe and boil tap water before using
it. This works fine, but can sometimes take too long to do. Here's the thing,
when you use powdered formula the only thing you need to make sure of is that
the water is free of the most harmful chemicals/pollutants.
Now how would you do this? Well the best way would
be to avoid using tap water at all. You never know what's in it and even if you
boil it there's still no guaranteed that what you'd have would be safe. Maybe
the pot you would use can be harmful to the water being boiled in it. The
safest bet for you would be using bottled water from the store. Now when we say
bottled water we're not talking about the cheap stuff you can get for under 5
dollars. We're talking about the kind specifically marked “nursery water”.
Nursery water that designed specifically for
babies is clean, but you still couldn't trust it completely. What you would
have to do is take measures to ensure it was safe. Here's how to do this. You
would make sure you looked for the type that was a low fluoride option. You
would also want it to be deionized, demineralized, distilled or made using
reverse osmosis. No type of bottled water you would find would meet all of
these criteria, but you should look for these labels on any water you buy to
use in your baby formula.
When you should
decide to boil water
No matter how safe you think certain
bottled water is, you should still decide to boil it. What you would want to do
is make sure the pot you used was safe and this is where things get tricky. You
would need to come up with some kind of way to boil water that wouldn't put it
at further danger of being tainted. And when we say to boil water we're still
talking about nursery water, not just general tap water. The World Health
Organization says that all bottled water should be boiled when it comes to baby
formula. It's the only way to ensure safe water.
You don't want to stress too much
about what type of water to use to prepare baby formula. You just want to avoid
tap water, use nursery water instead, and have a safe means of boiling it is
all. The hardest part would be finding a safe way to boil the water. Certain
types of pots would be out, because of the chance that rust or other metals
could leak into the water from heavy boiling. Once you figured out a safe way
to boil the water the rest becomes easy.
